A very strong woodcutter was employed in a timber merchant. His pay was really good and he was very glad to work in the timber merchant. He was very determined to do his best.
The first day at work, he brought down twenty trees. His boss was so proud of him.
“That was a great job”, he said.
He was very happy and highly motivated by the words of his boss. The next day, he could only bring down fifteen trees. He was disappointed in himself. He felt he also disappointed his boss.
The third day, he tried harder than the previous days but could bring down eleven trees.
Day after day, he was bringing down less and fewer trees. “What’s wrong with me, even when I try harder, I still have nothing to show for it. Am I losing my strength?”, he was heartbroken.
He went to meet his boss. “I’m sorry boss, for not doing as you expected. I’m really sorry. I would have wanted to do better but I don’t know what’s going on”.
“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?”, the boss asked.
“Oh, That. I never did. I never had time to sharpen my axe. I’m only interested in felling the trees”.
“Try and sharpen your axe”, his boss adviced.
The next day, the woodcutter sharpened his axe before he started work. He was able to bring down more trees than what he brought the first day he started working in the timber merchant.
Know the skills you need to develop to achieve your goals. Take time to sharpen the skills and you will be more productive.
